NATO intercepts Russian aircraft over Baltic

Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defence presented data on interceptions of vessels and aircraft completed near the Baltic States’ borders

Lithuania's Ministry of National Defence presented data on interceptions of vessels and aircraft completed near the Baltic States' borders from 30 March to 6 April.

On 2 April, NATO Baltic Air Policing fighter jets were scrambled once to intercept an IL-76 cargo aircraft of the Russian Federation. It was flying above the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea near the Baltic States' border heading from the Russian Federation towards Kaliningrad. The Russian aircraft was not on a pre-filed flight plan, but used its on-board transponder and maintained radio communications.

On 6 April, NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission fighter jets were scrambled once to intercept a military attack aircraft SU-24 of the Russian Federation flying over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea towards Kaliningrad. The Russian aircraft was not on a pre-filed flight plan, it did not use its on-board transponder and it did not maintain radio communications.

No violations of the Lithuanian airspace were recorded.
