Latvia considering to purchase ”Stinger” anti-air defense systems from the United States

Latvian National Armed Forces Commander Raimonds Graube said in an interview on the "Latvijas Neatkariga televizija" (LNT) news program "900 Seconds" that Latvia has still not made a final decision on the purchase of ''Stinger'' anti-air defense systems from the United States, and that it will decide on this matter within a month.

Asked when the surface-to-air missile systems could be supplied to Latvia if a positive decision is made, Graube said that this is dependent on various factors. Asked to mention an approximate delivery time, Graube said ''sometime next year''.

He added that ''Stinger'' surface-to-air missile systems are one of the best in the world. ''These missile systems are also capable of shooting down low flying military objects, like, for example, military helicopters which fail to identify themselves,'' Graube said.

As reported, Defense Minister Raimonds Vejonis (Greens/Farmers) was on a working visit to the United States last week, where he discussed the possible purchase of ''Stinger'' anti-air defense systems with local officials.
